Speakers to be announced

South Asian Network on Economic Modeling (SANEM), a leading think tank in Bangladesh, gladly presents a transformative lecture series on Political Economy. This series, organized by the SANEM Political Economy Center, aims to cultivate and popularize discussions on political economy aspects among students and policymakers in Bangladesh since the academic, socio-political, and policymaking atmosphere are yet to dig extensively into the Political Economy disciplines and how it can be incorporated into problem-solving. Our goal is not to substitute that gap, rather we would like to open the window of discussions.

About the Topic:

The concept of the Limited Access Order (LAO) was developed by Douglas North, John Wallis, and Barry Weingast and was prominently presented in their 2009 book, “Violence and Social Orders: A Conceptual Framework for Interpreting Recorded Human History.” This work built on their earlier research and contributions to the field of political economy, providing a comprehensive framework for understanding the dynamics of limited and open access orders in societies.

Speaker’s Profile:

Mirza M. Hassan, PhD, is a political economist and the Head of the Governance and Politics Cluster of BIGD, BRAC University.

His research largely focuses on political development, state-business relations, urban governance and local governance, justice sector and human rights, and related issues in South Asia, Pacific region and North Africa. He has more than 20 years of consulting experience on these issues for DFID, The Asia Foundation, The World Bank, UNDP, CARE Bangladesh, and other development agencies. He is well versed in conducting political economy analysis, institutional and stakeholder analysis, and using mixed methods.

He completed his PhD in Development Studies from the Institute of Commonwealth Studies (ICS), University of London, UK and his MA in Urban Studies and Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA. He is also an honorary Academic Fellow of the Institute of Development Policy Management (IDPM), University of Manchester, UK.

Objective:

The primary goal of this lecture series is to enhance understanding and stimulate intellectual discourse on political economy within Bangladesh. By targeting students and policymakers, SANEM aims to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical policy implementation, fostering a well-informed community capable of contributing to the country’s economic and political development.

Key Highlights:

  • In-depth exploration of political economy concepts and their relevance to Bangladesh.
  • Interactive sessions designed to engage and invoke inquiries among participants.
  • Opportunities for networking and collaboration among students, academics, and policymakers.

Role of SANEM:

As a premier think tank, SANEM is dedicated to advancing research and dialogue on economic and policy issues in South Asia. Through initiatives like this lecture series, SANEM continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the intellectual landscape of Bangladesh. The SANEM Political Economy Center is at the forefront of this mission, providing a platform for critical discussions and knowledge sharing.

Who Should Attend:

  • Students and academics interested in political economy.
  • Policymakers and government officials looking to integrate political economy insights into policy formulation.
